I have been bicycling, talking about bicycling and reflecting on the power of bicycling a lot this past year as I prepare for African Spokes and came across Afghan Cycles, an extraordinary film which was a five year project by badass film maker's at LET MEDIA, particularly founder Sarah Menzie and will be featured at the Toronto Film Festival this April.
"Afghan Cycles is a feature documentary about a generation of Afghan women who are pedaling their own revolution, aggressively challenging gender and cultural barriers using the bicycle as a vehicle for freedom, empowerment and social change."
Featured in Outside Magazine, Tedx, NatGeo, Huffington Post, Indie Wire and more this is a film which has so many layers, and so much beauty, and power.
And more than ever makes me grateful to ride a bike, for my freedoms as a woman in the west, for creators who connect us across the globe to those which might be considered other, but really have more in common with us than what might divide us.
Check out the Afghan Cycles website for more information and for upcoming screenings.
