We had the privilege of heading to the Horse Tenders Kokal Family farm in Greenfield New Hampshire last week to meet the herd of rescued mustangs. It was a powerful experience to walk through the herd, who are deeply bonded in a way which I have never experienced with domestic horse breeds and interacted with us each in their own lovely way, and with deep curiosity which had nothing to do with treats and everything to do with interpersonal exchanges between two intelligent beings.
The calm and joy of it all is something I can still shut my eyes and stand in. These horses, all once abused and thrown away, as are most of the mustangs in our culture, tragically, are now teachers of us humans, patient and sometimes humorous, reconnecting us to nature and our better selves.
It was an utter joy and a gift, and something I look forwards to doing again when I head back to New Hampshire in late spring to take a horsemanship lesson with horse whisperer genius, Chris Kokal.
