We went to the Spokane Sapphire Bar in Helena to learn more about Montana’s mineral rich history and try our hand at finding some. I love geology, and also getting my hands dirty, literally, in the place I am in, really knowing more about the place and how it was created. I have pearls from my local farm in Micronesia and Tourmaline's from my college years in Maine, Citrines from the town market in India. It's another way to really know a place.
It turns out panning for precious stones is tough tedious OCD work - we did pretty well at it actually, some of us more than others ;)

Hours of washing, sifting, swishing, picking - repeat! Turns out Christina is a champ at this, and I didn’t do too badly, we both have 4 ones which can be cut and a dozen small guys, and loved the complex geology of the ancient inland sea! #geology #sapphires #mining #wegotsome #geologygeeks #speculating
The four sapphires I will have cut at the top, the fancy sapphires to set rough, my beloved 'valueless' heart shaped finds, and the fossilized seeds and pods from the ancient inland sea that created the mineral rich beds. Such a great experience! #mining #spokanesapphirebar #sapphires #fossils #garnets #geology
